The simulator consisted of an actual cockpit including flight instruments. The researchers put people in the mindset of an Air Force pilot by bringing them into a flight simulator. It is a common belief that fighter pilots have very good vision. Recent research by Ellen Langer and colleagues suggests otherwise.
There is accumulating evidence that suggests that our thoughts are often capable of extending our cognitive and physical limits.Ĭan our thoughts improve our vision? We tend to believe that an essentially mechanical process determines how well we see. In many cases, thinking that we are limited is itself a limiting factor. Our cognitive and physical abilities are in general limited, but our conceptions of the nature and extent of those limits may need revising. Expecting to know the answers made people more likely to get the answers right. But, remarkably, the people who thought the answers were flashed did better on the test. In fact, for both groups, a random string of letters, not the answers, was flashed. The other group was told that the flashes simply signaled the next question. People in one group were told that before each question, the answer would be briefly flashed on their screens - too quickly to consciously perceive, but slow enough for their unconscious to take it in.
Psychologists Ulrich Weger and Stephen Loughnan recently asked two groups of people to answer questions. School is a definite way of life and the more the child can move comfortably between home and school, the easier the process for all.There seems to be a simple way to instantly increase a person’s level of general knowledge. Leave school notes visible to read for all. For example, display children’s work on fridges, leave school newsletters around the home, ensure the child has a comfortable space to do homework etc. Make your home a space where the influences of school are present. It may challenge us to discuss other values, beliefs etc. A school must be open to differences and will educate inviting your child to consider optional points of view. They will challenge us as we may hear them expressing views that are contradictory to our own. Children will come home influenced by so many varied opinions and attitudes. Take care to keep in mind that this is your child’s journey in a different era and will present different challenges and opportunities that should not be clouded by your own memories.ĩ. School life for your child may bring back nostalgic memories of your time at school both positive and negative.

Ask yourself what can I learn as apparent from the school? If you keep your focus on what is happening you will be amazed at the learning you gain.ħ. This cannot be dismissed at the end of the day if the child is keen to talk about school. Consider the number of hours per day a child spends at school. Playgrounds are great places to chat with other families and talk about the events at school.ĥ. Ensure you have a presence in the school. Invite your child to read newsletters to you and to talk about forthcoming events.Ĥ. They are proud to have the presence of their parents in their school environment.ģ. This brings home and school much closer together. If you become more actively engaged with school activities you will have more understanding of the internal structure of the school. Discuss the activities and events that are present in the life of the school.Ģ. It should not sit as an added extra but be seen as an integral part of family life across the year. Ensure school is seen as an important factor in your family.
